Kanaloa Pacific

Sailing Collective CaliforniaRestoration, Adventure & Freedom on the California Coast.

Kanaloa Pacific is a California-sailing collective operating a 55-foot catamaran from Monterey Harbor. After 14 years of restoration by founder and captain Deyess Payne, the Kanaloa is afloat and ready
for its first season.
We operate as a participatory sailing cooperative. Guests are crew. They cook together, stand watch, learn to handle the boat, and spend time on one of the world's most biodiverse coastlines.
Join the collective, have access to the boat, reconnect with nature, experience world class surf breaks and enjoy seasonal locally sourced organic foods.Kanaloa is about community living simply, adventuring sustainably and sharing ocean education.

In 2012, Deyess Payne - a lifetime Santa Cruz waterman acquired the Kanaloa after watching it wash ashore twice and it nearly be destroyed. Fourteen years of restoration followed. Every frame, fitting, and system touched by hand.In February 2026, after ten years on the waitlist, Monterey Harbor called and said the mooring ball is ready for the Kanaloa. Which is perfect timing as the Kanaloa is now in the water. This 55-foot catamaran was customized for sustainable dive, surf and sailing adventures along the California coast. Living simply. Adventuring sustainably. Sharing ocean education. Every moment on the Pacific is a chance to get grounded, reconnect with nature, and move with the elements.

The Monterey mooring ball is secured. The boat is in the water. This is the last gap before open water.
If you've been thinking about a Voyage Share or just want to help get us there - now is the moment. Every dollar goes directly to the boat.

OCTOBER SAILING ROUTE

Monterey Bay → Channel Islands

This is where the cold northern Pacific meets the warm southern California current. The crossing itself is an offshore passage through the Pacific.
Expect dolphins riding the bow, sea lions hauled out on the rocks, and pelicans feeding in the deep-water channel.
The Passage South
Monterey to the Channel Islands is a 175-nautical-mile offshore passage, roughly 40 hours of open Pacific sailing through some of the most dramatic coastline in California. Including the Big Sur coast, Point Conception, one of the great turning points of the California coast where the Pacific swings east and the weather changes character, marks the entry into Southern California waters.
This is bluewater sailing.
The Islands
The Channel Islands National Park is one of the most remote and pristine environments on the West Coast. Five islands with no roads, no services, and no crowds. Sea caves carved into ancient cliffs. Kelp forests so clear you can see the seafloor from the surface. Anchorages where the only other sound is the sea.
We route through Santa Cruz Island first: Scorpion Anchorage, Prisoners Harbor, Smugglers Cove. With 7 to 10 days you see it properly.
The wildlife alone justifies the crossing. Whales, dolphins, sea otters, sea lions, and more species of seabird than almost anywhere else in California, all within swimming distance of the boat.
Late summer through early fall is the window: settled conditions, warm water, and the best visibility diving and snorkelling of the year.
